Dual Applying with Ortho - Anyone with experience?

$

Hi all,

Newly minted MS4 and I plan on applying Ortho, but the ever looming fear of not matching has made me consider the possibility of dual applying to something else. Now, I can't really see myself as happy in another field, but certain other specialties would be better than getting that dreadful email next march saying I didn't match. If anyone has any experience applying to Ortho and another specialty I would love to hear about how it went and if they thought it was worth it.

Thanks...

Ortho technical difficulty

I over heard some people ( not sure who they were) arguing about orthopedic surgery vs other surgical fields in terms of technical difficulty/ability. One of them kept saying orthopods are not nearly as technically savvy as other surgical fields, saying ortho procedures are "easy" in comparison to other fields. Im sure he is misinformed or just an ass, but his words did bring some questions to mind.

1. How technically difficult is ortho in comparison to other surgical fields? More...

How many cases as 1st surgeon does an average orthopaedic surgery resident in the US graduate with? And how many 1st assists do you have by that time? I understand that the case diversity differs from program to proram, but what would the rough distribution be between trauma/elective orthopaedics?

What are the essential elements of an OP note?

What exactly needs to be included in an op note? What doesn't need to be included?

Obviously, a good account of the operation performed. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the other stuff. And I'm asking with respect to Hand Surgery.

Of the following, what is and isn't necessary?

Tourniquet time - it's recorded elsewhere usually.
Fluids, blood loss. - it's hand surgery this is usually minimal.

Where to begin? Patient seen in preop, marked, consent checked etc?

Innovation/Product Design in Private Practice

I've always had a strong interest in product design and consulting for instrument companies, and possibly starting my own company sometime during my career following residency/fellowship. How feasible is it to do this in a private practice vs an academic setting?

Hi I am currently trying to match into ortho from low tier US MD medical school with full tuition scholarship. I know it's a long way ahead, but I wanted to get some advices!

A little about myself, I just finished a block of two courses with honors in both and starting on ortho research in a week. And my question is.. how hard is it to match into ortho in major cities coming from low tier MD school? My home state is CA and I went to college in CA, and matching into CA anywhere would be a...

Are there any good ANKI decks to use for Ortho Rotations?

Hey All,

As a med student i have been using firecracker and other anki decks that students have made and passed around. I find it that this method of studying really resonates with me.

I was wondering if there are any pre-made ANKI decks for limb anatomy, fractures, and other items that would be good to review before i start my rotation.

Thanks!

Partial Meniscus Root Avulsions

I would like to run a quick question by you guys. I have been doing some reading on meniscus root tears, but I notice that most of the published literature out there specifically covers total meniscus root avulsions, and there isn't much out there on partial root avulsions. I recall reading an article published by LaPrade in (I think) 2015 where he suggested treating partial root tears exclusively with partial meniscectomy or conservative non-surgical management. Just out of curiosity, is...

How Much Medicine Do You Know?

As someone strongly considering a career in orthopedics, I am curious as to how much medicine orthopedic surgeons generally know. From my understanding, orthopedic surgeons are considerably less experienced in medical management of patients than, say, a general surgeon, and therefore forget a lot of the medicine of patient management and things of that nature.

I'm only asking because, like I previously mentioned, I am strongly considering orthopedics, but I do still love medicine and hope...

Does anyone have any tips for preparing for the OITE and excelling in the different services that an ORTHO resident will be on during residency?
- How to prepare for the OITE on a regular basis?
- What books to read for each service?

Resources that I have:
- AAOS Comprehensive Review Books 2nd edition
- Handbook of fractures
- Hopenfeld
- Netter Orthopedic_Anatomy 2nd edition
- Orthobullets

I will use this thread as a way for me to motivate myself to study and keep track of my studying...

Wanted to write a post here as I've heard this question come up recently about what would happen to DO graduates who graduate from a program that transitions to ACGME accreditation.

This is taken directly from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery website: https://www.abos.org/certification/part-i-examination.aspx

I've been searching for programs that allow medical students looking for opportunities to work hands on (surgically) in developing or poor countries.

My hope is to find a program that allows me to get early hands on experience that i woulsnt get in medical school and help people in need in the process.
I've heard stories of people who have done this but I can't seem to find anything . Can someone point me in the right direction and give me some information regarding these...

Hey All,

I am in a non US medical system. I finally got an orthopedic Residency spot. 50 Interns competing for 4 spots. Phew!

I have 2 months before I start my residency training. I wanted to know what things should I do which will help me out in the coming years.

Our curriculum is designed as: 1st year- all Off rotations for 5 months together (Plastics, neuro, GS, vascular etc) Then 1 month simulation block with labs so attendings teach us directly (AO courses, K wire fixation, plaster...

Too late?

Hi all,

I'm a new M4, and up until now I have been committed to another specialty. Recently I have been getting some exposure to orthopedics and have been starting to consider it. I have the ability to schedule an orthopedic elective from mid August to mid Sept, but I have yet to do so. Just wondering how I realistically stand at this point as I have been reading some contradictory information.

Step 1 273, step 2 TBD, Honors in all M3 clerkships, have research but not in ortho, probably...

Essential Tremor and Ortho

Hi guys,

I have been thinking a lot about switching to orthopaedic surgery as a career - it was my first choice and I sort of gave up on it because I didn't think it was possible. Now, I'm having second thoughts and want to chase the dream (excuse the cliche).

Thing is: I have moderate essential tremor, which is a degenerative condition and means my hands always have a slight tremor (which can be more pronounced every now and then). I am on beta-blocker (propranolol) but this is sort of...

Advice need for Ortho Resident pushed out of program

I really need to ask you all some advice, but I have to let you know that I am not in medical school or at all involved with medicine.

I have a very good friend who went to med school and recently completed his 2nd year of residency as an orthopedic surgeon.

Unfortunately he found out that his contract was not renewed. I have read the letter that his chairman gave him and basically they only reason they are giving him for basically firing him was that during his last year 50% of his...

OMS-3 here. I have what I consider to be marginal or below average scores for this specialty:
240 Step 1, 570 COMLEX (damn)

I'm wondering which programs would be best for me to look at in terms of Sub-Is/away rotations. I'm going to keep my options open because I know that I don't quite measure up in terms of Comlex score to many applicants. I'm also working on publications + working on adding more in the future.

Basically what are my options and what can I do to maximize my chances of...

Fitting in ortho research while medical student

I will matriculate Fall 2017 and have come to realize from looking at the schedule that there is little time to do any meaningful research in years 1 and 2. Exceptions are 1 week breaks mid-term, 2 weeks off during Christmas and 4 weeks off between summer 1 and 2. Would I be able to do any meaningful research during those breaks? Should I schedule an elective research away rotation (my school isn't an academic center)?
