DO applying for MD ortho

As a DO applying to an MD orthopedic surgery residency, I am also planning on doing an osteopathic internship. Does this mean that I will apply to the ortho programs during my internship year or do I apply during my MS IV year.

Thanks guys.

Call schedule and days off during residency

I am an MD / PhD student who has always wanted to do ortho, but I am having a bit of a crisis. Many of us got interested in ortho because we love to be active. For me, being active in the daylight (running, swimming, etc.) is a staple that "keeps me going" in life. I don't mind working like a maniac (I work ~80 hours currently), but I need to be able to take care of myself as well.

So my question is about how one could potentially coordinate getting outside while the sun is still up a...

Osteopathic Programs that are "2-week friendly"?

Just looking for opinions on any programs that are truly happy with 2 week rotations. I realize many program websites list 2wk rotations as an option, but I'm really looking for programs that will still rank a candidate strongly. Responses from those who have rotated are greatly appreciated.

Programs I'm most curious about:
Toledo
McLaren Pontiac
McLaren Lansing
Genesys

Thanks so much! Any help is needed and appreciated.

LOR from rotation @ program?

Is it considered poor form to request a LOR from an audition rotation? My situation is that I'm rotating at a program last month of MS3 and am wondering if there's anything negative about requesting a LOR from the program (assuming I have a good rotation)?

Reasoning is: I may be wanting to come back for a 2nd rotation at this program during audition season this fall, and I feel a LOR from the program could hold some weight.

Applying for aways

I have a good idea what aways I want to apply for and I want to apply in mid-march after I have gotten all my immunization titres/etc. My question is regarding this scenario:

Say I want to apply for three aways anytime during July-October.
  1. Do I apply to just those three programs?
  2. If I apply to just those three, I know some aways don't get back to you until 2-3 weeks before the rotation is supposed to start so what do you do if two of the aways give you the same month?...

High risk recreational activities as a surgeon

Probably a noob question but I was discussing this with a fellow student the other day about whether or not surgeons in general avoid high risk sporting activities like MMA, snowboarding, surfing etc. I personally have been surfing and boarding my whole life and would hate to have to give it up or avoid it at all, but is the risk of suffering a possible career ending injury worth the risk? Or am I overthinking it and blowing the risk way out of proportion? Any residents or attendings care to...

Girls in orthopedics?

I am very interested in orthopedics and have been for years and I have realized it is completely dominated by males. I know this field is very competitive and I love that honestly but are women in this field considered ¨not strong enough¨ or do women just not make through residency? I would like to specialize in fractures or trauma (any advise on what to do for these would be appreciated). I have broken several bones in my life and had surgery on both arms and all I remember are my doctors....

Why is restriced internal rotation first to be noticed in Hip Osteoarthritis?

Hi,

I have read that in Hip OA, restriction of internal rotation is the first movement which is noted to be lacking.

Does any know/have a logical guess as to why this is? Why not another movement eg flexion, or abduction?

Thanks

Ortho Residents; scored >220

Hi everyone, My SO is about to start 4th year and has been pursuing Orthopedics since his 1st year. He is terrified he won't match to a decent residency or match at all because is got a 224 on Step 1. He's ranked in the top half of his class, but not top quartile. He has done 3 Ortho research studies, presented 1 in Argentina at the Global Spine Conference. He has gotten high pass on 2 of his core rotations so far, clinical honors but not overall honors on those two because he struggles with...

Brachydactyly Type D

Hello,

I will be applying to medical school next year, and I'm hoping to eventually go down the orthopedic surgery route. The only thing, other than future academic obstacles, that could limit me in this area are my hands.

I was born with brachydactyly type D, which means I have much shorter than normal thumbs. I am also not able to bend the tips back, like normal ones do.

I don't believe this will limit me at all getting into med school and doing the normal tasks, but do you guys...

Are You Happy in Orthopedics?

I haven't seen a thread in the orthopedic forum yet like this and feel it would really be a big help to students thinking about orthopedic surgery. If any current residents and/or orthopedic surgeons can comment that would be great. Thank you.

1. Are you happy working in orthopedic surgery (0-10)?
2. What is your main reason for choosing orthopedics as your specialty?
3. What's the best part of your job?
4.What is one thing you would change about your job?
5. Do you like your hours and how...

Best books for intern year

Last thread that was similar to this question was back in 2011, and since then the amount of Ortho rotations during intern year has gone up quite a bit, and books always change and come into and out of popularity. Given the increase in ortho during intern year I was wondering what books you recommend interns have? I was thinking of Hoppenfields and Handbook of Fractures for sure, but am kind of lost on what else. Do you recommend getting Wiesel, Campbells, or Rockwood as an intern? How about...

Hey guys,

First I would truly appreciate it if you guys would not to write me off about my question because this is my first post or because I am admittedly telling you I haven't gotten into med school yet. A little background: finished my undergrad in the honors college (microbiology), I worked in a research lab for two years in drug discovery, I am published in the journal of biotechnology, and I share a patent with two other doctors. After college I taught science and coached the soccer...

Timing aways

When do most people do away rotations? July, August, September? Do you do them back-to-back? And does your home "away" count towards the 3 aways most people do?

Also, when should you finish your aways by? As in, when should be the last month you do an away rotation?

Thanks!
