Interested in Orthopedic Hand Surgery: Will I be selling my life force/ soul to make this happen?

I am currently a graduate student in occupational therapy, wrapping up my "book based" learning in preparation to go out on clinical fieldwork rotations. I am very interested in hand and upper extremity therapy, and this has translated into a very strong medical interest. I have done some research and watched some hand surgeries, and I am just astonished at the work and how it can immediately return some patients to function. I am considering practicing OT for a few years and potentially...

M1 trying to match into ortho

Hi I am currently trying to match into ortho from low tier US MD medical school with full tuition scholarship. I know it's a long way ahead, but I wanted to get some advices!

A little about myself, I just finished a block of two courses with honors in both and starting on ortho research in a week. And my question is.. how hard is it to match into ortho in major cities coming from low tier MD school? My home state is CA and I went to college in CA, and matching into CA anywhere would be a...

Ortho is always kind of dead on SDN (where did everyone go? OrthoGate used to be really active and then died, and all those folks didn't come here obviously...)

But for any of my brothers and sisters who started getting their invites for Sports interviews, congratulations and good luck.

M1 Thinking about Ortho - Research question

Hello everyone,

I am a first year medical student and I am exploring fields that I am interested in to pursue as a career. Initially i was very drawn to optho and have lined up research in that department for the summer. However, I am also heavily considering orthopedic surgery, but the deadline for summer research is approaching and I do not think i'll have time to find a mentor so soon in Ortho (and I am still interested in optho as well!!)

My question is, as this is my one big chunk of...

How to choose a backup specialty for ortho

I'm an ms3 do student getting ready to set up some audition rotations but I'm not sure what to do in case I don't get enough interviews to feel comfortable matching. I have a 617 comlex and a 248 usmle, so decent scores but not great. My problem is I don't know what to do if I don't match. I'm a typical med student, and not matching scares me due to high ish student loans.

This do merger is concerning because I don't know how many do ortho spots will close. This will make it tougher than...

Loan Repayment

Just curious if residents could give feedback regarding loan repayment options and which ones are realistic during residency and into your career as an Ortho Attending or in private practice.

Does Ortho face any threats aside from reimbursement cuts?

As a soon to be med-student of above average neuroticism I've been doing research on the various specialties I could see myself pursuing 4 years down the road. The results so far have not been pretty. It seems that just about every field out there is somewhere between dead (path), dying (anesthesia), on the precipice (rads), or with dark clouds gathering on the horizon (derm, EM, everything else)

Path- can't find a job, won't be paid much if you do, stuffed to the brim with FMGs....

Burnout & Dropout in Surgical Residency

I'm coming to the end of my first year of a surgical residency and am finding myself more exhausted, demoralized and questioning of my career goals than ever before. Having gotten a real look at what both surgical residency and a surgical career will realistically look like, I'm really questioning whether this is something I still want to do, whether I'm willing to work long weeks, nights and weekends for the rest of my life, and whether I can even make it through 5 gruelling years of...

Importance of residency/fellowship prestige

Current M4, going into orthopedics and on the interview trail right now -- taking a little bit of a break over the holidays and was hoping I could get some opinions on this.

What is the overall importance of residency & fellowship 'prestige' on future job prospects? Obviously if you want to be an academic orthopod at the Mayo Clinic, HSS, Harvard, etc... then going to a powerhouse residency and fellowship is probably the right choice. I'm more questioning the other positions -- either...

West Coast Programs

Hey all,

I'm an MS3 trying to decide on a West Coast away. I want to be in academia and would like a balanced program. I'm trying to decide between UCSF, USC, Stanford, and UCSD. I know there has been some flux in the west coast programs with changes in hiring/firing people over the last couple of years. I was wondering if anyone who interviewed there/did an away there/is a resident or an attending there can chime in a little more about any information they may have. I tried to contact my...

Would anyone be willing to contribute to a list of programs that have COMLEX score cutoffs for rotating? I missed 550 by a couple points so I'm already bitter, and I'm getting a little anxious about filling up my elective slots.

So far I have
No minimum:
OSUMC (unless you count $500 as a minimum)

Wellmont

>550:

MS3 here. So before you start judging why I am choosing between 2 of the highest paid/most competitive specialties (And I wonder about that myself all the time, too). Here is a little about me:

1) MD/PhD, PhD in bone metabolism. Would love to continue basic science research in some way in the future. But won't die if all I can do is clinical research.
2) Definitely will stay in academia. LOVE teaching, LOVE research, LOVE seeing the most complicated/referral cases. Also LOVE being in a big...

Books to succeed on Ortho AIs

I'm currently doing an elective in Ortho and honestly I have no idea about the whole ortho language.
My attending told me to buy essentials for orthopedics and read it.
Are there any recommended books that I should buy and start reading to at least get the basics of ortho down?
Right now I've seen the following:-

1. Netter's handbook of orthopaedic anatomy, and

2. Koval's Handbook of Fractures

Should I purchase Essentials of Orthopedic surgery?

Or would a knee brace be counterproductive, cause muscles to weaken and become dependant on the brace?

Step 2 CK question, please help!

Hello everybody!

Thanks for checking in. So, I have searched for quite awhile, but I have not found other threads that had posts in the same position I am in.

I got a 258 on Step 1, but dropped to a 237 on Step 2 CK. I am all done interviewing. I passed CS. Rank list is due in 1 month. Should/do I upload these scores on ERAS, which previously only had my Step 1? If I do, what do you think are my chances that my big drop in my CK score could negatively affect my rank at programs?

Thank you...
