Arthritis and matching into ortho?

It's not me.

But one of my classmates had such bad arthritis that he had to miss a week of school because he was in so much pain. Is it possible to match into ortho, complete residency, and practice if you have RA or OA? (I assume it's RA given that he is in his 20s)

I personally think he is stupid for even wanting to try to match into ortho or anything surgical given his affliction. But, I could be wrong given that I am not a practicing orthopedist.

Im in my second month of rotations and will start family medicine next month, however i know what field i want to go into. I always keep an open mind no matter what rotation I'm doing but I've always been interested in ortho as I've shadowed multiple surgeons.

COMLEX level 1 was 657 and USMLE was 230. Im in the top 15% of my class and in SSP. However i have no research experience.

My question is what should i start doing in my third year to boost my CV, what should i do to prepare for...

Looking specifically for input from Ortho residents.

Scores are competitive (COMLEX 758/ USMLE 268) and I want to be as helpful a team member my 3rd/4th year as I can (third year elective is scheduled at a hospital I am interested in for residency).

I'd appreciate input on expectations for me as a third year in addition to showing up, working hard, and knowing the basic anatomy appropriate for my level of training.

Specifically, I'd like feedback on expectations for PE skills, RADs...

Hello all,

New to SDN 3rd year DO student who's committed to orthopedic surgery. Comlex 630, USMLE 240, SSP, class rank top 15%. I am planning on scheduling 4 audition rotations during my first semester of 4th year at the programs I'm most interested in, but will apply to all osteopathic programs. I have read that audition rotations are extremely important, and you're almost guaranteed not to get an interview from programs you didn't rotate at. Does this mean that out of my 4 aways, I'm...

As an MS1 student with aspirations of matching into Ortho ultimately, would my non study time be better spent pursuing Ortho research endeavors or should I devote time to other extracurricular activities such as a student government leadership position? What should my priority list look like if my end game is matching into Ortho?

Hi all, I'm at an Urgent Care where we see lots of fractures. I was wondering what the general consensus is about giving a fracture patient a dose of toradol... both on if it significantly increases bleeding into a possible hematoma at the fracture site and if the patient has to go stat to the OR what effect it might have. Do you guys use it still in these cases?

What are your thoughts on doing an intra articular knee injection on a patient on Coumadin and plavix concurrently. The patient's INR is on the low therapeutic range. I've found a lot of evidence that says its safe to do joint injections on coumadin, if the patient's INR is therapeutic, but couldn't find anything specifically about coumadin and plavix together. Also - what about aspirin and plavix? Any sources/references/practical advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello All,

Hope all of you are doing well

I need advice and help, take 2 mins out if you can.

I started ortho residency 3 weeks ago. And prior residency i kept asking residents about their studying habits, recommended books and i got different answers.

I ended up doing this:
1. Printed out orthobullets and filed the sections into 8 different major chapters.
2. Id start for example with trauma in orthobullets printed file, use a trauma reference textbook and add notes.
3. I am hoping to...

I am a third year and I have Comlex of 616 and Top 5-7% in my class. I was wondering what my chances are with no research experience and scores to get in. I do plan on doing a case review and contribute to a lab.

I was wondering what DO Orthopedic Residencies I should be doing my auditions and where I can potentially be competitive?
What is the Average Comlex to get Ortho now?
Places I might not have to rotate through but potentially still get interviews and spots?
Who to get letter of recs...

Hey everyone, looking for some feedback on how to improve/chances:

M3 at a top 20 school
Step 1 = 260+
M3 Grades so far = H in OB/GYN, HP in Surgery and Peds, P in Anesthesia
Pubs = 1 Ortho paper, 1 gen surg abstract, 4 posters (1 national Ortho), 2 podium (both national - 1 Ortho), currently working on a basic sci pub & another Ortho pub
Fun fact = developed an app concept in med school & presented it nationally (won competition)

Frankly, my fear is the HP in Surgery. My shelf score...

I am a junior resident interested in switching from neurosurgery to ortho. Any thoughts/advice from anyone who has either successfully done it themselves or knows anyone who has?

Is ortho a big picture or all about the details specialty?

Does ortho have people who are more big picture or is it more about the details?

My school tells me I am a big picture kind of guy. I agree with to a degree when it pertains to topics that don't particularly interest me. But I will dig in to something that I like and learn the details because it interests me.

On a related note, my attendings say that ortho is more about application and problem solving

since you have to be good with people and not just good with surgery what is the hardest and easiest part of dealing with patients? how to give the best care when they want to ask so many questions and we dont have a lot of time to spend because of the amount of patients seen per day.

I'm currently a 3rd year student at a DO school that has a fairly good reputation and usually has 3-4 students match ortho every year. Scores are the following:

USMLE: 240
COMLEX: 601

I'm interested in the following programs and plan on doing my auditions at each in no particular order:

- Largo Medical Center
- Pinnacle Health
- Doctors Hospital
- Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital
- Wellmont Health System

I know my scores are competitive enough to get me an audition at these places;...

Hello,

Did anyone use any specific books or resources to prep for interviews? Was there anything that surprised you during your interviews? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Best books for intern year

Last thread that was similar to this question was back in 2011, and since then the amount of Ortho rotations during intern year has gone up quite a bit, and books always change and come into and out of popularity. Given the increase in ortho during intern year I was wondering what books you recommend interns have? I was thinking of Hoppenfields and Handbook of Fractures for sure, but am kind of lost on what else. Do you recommend getting Wiesel, Campbells, or Rockwood as an intern? How about...
